How can we explain the mafia phenomenon to new generations? Certainly, the memory of mafia victims on March 21st is the perfect occasion to reflect. For this reason, Polygonal met with the students of the “Cesare Chiominto” Comprehensive Institute. The activities took place in Cori and Giulianello to promote awareness and participation.
First of all, the goal was not just to tell the history of crime. On the contrary, we helped young people understand the mafia beyond stereotypes. The journey started with real examples, such as the infamous “Sack of Palermo.” To learn more about our school interventions, visit the Polygonal News section.
From the “Sack of Palermo” to active citizenship
During the workshops, the students analyzed how construction speculation destroyed green areas for mafia interests. In fact, through these concrete cases, students saw how the mafia modifies the territory. We then explored the economic evolution of criminal organizations in the 1980s.
For example, we discussed the direct consequences on society:
- Unfinished works: the waste of public resources that harms everyone.
- Local economy: how the control of public contracts stifles healthy businesses.
- Youth drain: the need to leave one’s home territory due to a lack of opportunities.
However, the work did not stop at theory. In addition, the students participated in a simulation activity by becoming “mayors for a day.” In this way, they proposed concrete ideas to improve their community.
The role of the Val-You project
In short, this transition from knowledge to action is the heart of our method. The initiative is part of the European project Val-You, which promotes democratic values in schools. Currently, we are working to ensure that concepts like justice and responsibility become daily practices.
Certainly, educating for legality means offering tools to read the world critically. Therefore, we believe that change starts precisely from the awareness of the youngest. Remembering mafia victims thus becomes a constant commitment to building a different and fairer future.
